Down
East marshes are exciting places for youngsters (and the not so
young) to explore. They are teeming with life-marine animals,
shell fish, salt water plants, breathtaking shore and water birds.
Harkers
Island Area is part of this wonderful habitat. Bordered by the
Straits, North River and the Rachael Carson Estuary, across from
Beaufort. These areas are accessible by local watercraft, built
to navigate the shallow waters of our sounds and marshes seldom
visited by tourists.
Our
outings encompass several facets of discovery: what do we want
to find; where can we find it; how do we get there; and what equipment
do we need? Some of the marine life you will find are blue crabs,
sand dollars, hermit crabs, periwinkles, sea whips (a soft coral),
oysters, starfish, sand fiddlers and sea squirts. On the way to
our destination, you may see dolphins, cow nosed rays, egrets,
blue herons, oyster catchers and more
